At Amulet, we navigate the complexities of existence through self-care —embracing both the magnificent and the wearisome moments that shape our journey and connect us to our ancestors.
ACCESS TO JOY: We believe in the power of joy and the necessity of nurturing a safe space brimming with community, opportunity, creativity, and self-expression. Our commitment to joy is intertwined with our connection to the earth and the spiritual realms, as we advocate for equal access to well-being for all.
ACCESS TO EQUITY: We recognize the historic systems of power and oppression that influence our lives and aim to bring forth equity in our practices. Acknowledging that we do not all begin at the same starting line, we strive to address these imbalances, centering the needs of those most affected while honoring healing practices and the wisdom of our ancestors.
ACCESS TO SELF-TRUTH: We celebrate the spectrum of identities that challenge conventional definitions. We envision a future enriched by curiosity and radical imagination, where everyone feels empowered to express their true selves.
ACCESS TO BELONGING: Our commitment to community care encourages us to recognize our interdependence on one another. Through the sharing of knowledge, resources, and support, we create a network that diminishes reliance on external institutions and fosters a sense of belonging.
ACCESS TO SELF-DETERMINATION: Each individual's autonomy is sacred; we uphold the right of every person to make decisions that resonate with their own path. By providing access to resources and information, we support everyone in their journey toward empowerment and fulfillment.
Meet Amulet’s Founder: Summer Shelton
Summer Shelton is the founder and visionary behind Amulet, a space dedicated to community, care, and connection. She is a descendant of the Haney family of the Seminole Nation, with lineage that also includes Scottish (Clan Rollo), English (Shelton), Cherokee (Jolly), and West African (Robards) ancestry. Born into a musical family in Louisiana and raised in Mississippi, Summer’s roots are firmly planted in the cultural and natural landscapes of the South.
Summer began her career in the self-care industry in 1997, working as an Aveda stylist while putting herself through college to become a teacher. She holds a B.S. in Curriculum & Instruction and a M.Ed. in Technology & Learning. She went on to earn her principal certification through the prestigious Pathways to Leadership in Urban Schools program and served in school leadership roles in the School District of Philadelphia. She later completed additional certification through Yale’s S.O.M. Women in Leadership program. Most recently, she studied for her credentials in Native Education at The University of Washington. In Washington state, Summer served for several years as Director of Teaching & Learning at a Coast Salish Tribal school. Her work has spanned classrooms, communities, and countries—including time spent in international schools in Jeju, South Korea, and Prague, Czech Republic.
Summer brings Amulet to Knoxville, Tennessee—coming full circle to the place where her career began. Amulet is the culmination of decades of experience in education, beauty, and leadership. It is a space shaped by care, community, and a belief in the power of intentional environments to foster healing and connection for those who live as women.
